Course overview

What we’ll work on

MIS 752 is a special-topics course focused on the design, evaluation, and responsible use of AI in healthcare. Students examine how modern models behave in consequential settings and build practical workflows around realistic healthcare problems.

01

Clinical and healthcare AI use cases

02

Responsible evaluation, safety, privacy, and limitations

03

Hands-on labs using synthetic or properly de-identified data

What you will be able to do

Who it is for. Graduate students headed for analytics, product, or operations roles in healthcare, and anyone who needs to evaluate AI in a regulated setting.

Prerequisites. Graduate standing in the Lee Business School or permission of the instructor. Familiarity with Python, or willingness to learn it quickly. Prior coursework in statistics or data analytics is recommended but not required.

Tools. Python, Synthea synthetic patient data, Fairlearn, large language model APIs, WebCampus. Format. Online, asynchronous, Fall 2026 (August 24 to December 12).

01

Map the healthcare data ecosystem: claims processing, FHIR and OMOP standards, and the 18 HIPAA identifiers

02

Build clinical predictive models on realistic synthetic patient data at scale

03

Audit models for bias and fairness with the Fairlearn framework and identify proxy discrimination

04

Design agentic AI systems with multi-agent verification loops for prior authorization, documentation, and patient navigation

05

Evaluate AI systems responsibly, with attention to safety, privacy, and limitations
